08:25 pm - About the finnish sauna gnome.
Well as you know sauna is very important for the finns and it is traditionally a place that people respect a lot. It has been respected like a church and that's how one should behave in sauna. You shouldn't for example swear there or the sauna gnome will get angry!
There are many kinds of gnomes for different kinds of things. They are all very small and you hardly ever see them. They must be treated well or they will bring a lot of suffering to the house. They can get angry from small things!
As I said, the sauna gnome takes care of the sauna. He lives there and he has the right to go to the sauna as the last person. The owners of that sauna have to bring food to the gnome and keep him happy, otherwise something bad can happen. ;)

I apologize my bad english and hope that it was at least a bit interesting. :)

I just joined this community, I hope it's okay :)

I'm from Finland and the sauna in there is maybe a bit different. We go to sauna naked but the public saunas are always separated for women and men. :) Almost everyone has a sauna at home and it's not considered as a luxory.
And about the sauna gnome.. It lives in the sauna and keeps it clean and you should respect it! (And also clean the sauna yourself.)

08:03 pm - UK people! Pledge never to wear a swimsuit in a sauna!
Sign this pledge, it's a step in the right direction.

"I will never wear a swimsuit in a sauna (no matter how convenient it might be) but only if 12 other people in the UK will don towels and do the same."

A swimsuit has no rightful place in a sauna, it is constrictive and unhygenic.
Sitting naked directly on the sauna benches is also unhygenic.

There is a simple solution - a large towel loosely wrapped around oneself.

However, many saunas in gyms and hotels are positioned near to the pool, so many people - myself included - find it easier and more convenient to pop into the sauna in a swimsuit.

By signing this pledge, you are not committing to exposing your naked body - although that remains a healthy way to use a sauna where appropriate.

Instead, you are agreeing to take the trouble to go back to the changing rooms (or some other suitable place) to change out of a swimsuit and into a towel.

(A second towel is best rather than the one you are going to dry yourself with. Many hotels will supply 2 towels if asked).

Of course, this all depends on us getting enough people to agree - that way, next time either of us is tempted to 'cheat', we can be reminded of the great many PledgeBank users doing what is right rather than what is easiest.

hi all! i'm new, so a quick intro.

my name's emily, i'm from chicago, am currently a senior at the university of wisconsin - madison. my sauna history - my dad is from the upper peninsula of michigan, where a ton of finns settled back in the day. not to suprisingly, pretty much everyone i know up there (which is a LOT - dad has 8 sibs) has a sauna, and i'm talking the old school kind - wood burning, water heated by the stove, etc. i was raised in saunas and when i'm not in the u.p. i miss saunaing terribly. i never feel cleaner than after a sauna.

but let me tell you, growing up in a city and hearing "SAW-nuh" grated on me so much! all my friends are now aware of the proper pronunciation, but i had to practically beat it into them! and they're always amazed when i tell them that it's actually a form of bathing, not just a steam room like in a spa.

anyway, that's me, i love saunas with a passion and wish i had my own. see y'all around!

I grew up with a sauna in our back yard...and it was totally normal to have it fired up every weekend for the family (imagine a family of Finn's living in the middle of Texas taking sauna in July....LOL)

nudity was not even thought of...it was just the way you did things...but if we had friends over...suits came out because they would not understand.

Ours was totally "old school"...hand made wood burning stove...cold water only to the stone building (hot water was heated by the stove itself)...no electricity (gas lamps in a window with a broken mirror to reflect)...just like what my father grew up with. (but we jumped into a swimming pool instead of a lake after...hehe)...and with the wood stove...we have gotten over 220F in there (ok...thats just bragging now)

I have not been in a sauna in over 10 years...and i am totally missing it...clearing my mind...clearing my skin...I was totally hated in high school because i never had a single pimple or blemish on my skin.

I hope i can buy my own place with a yard so i can build one like i grew up with...

I miss it sooo much
If i can ever

10:59 am - cantre parcs saunas
Hi we are nudist couple from the uk. Last year we went to centre parcs in holland, and had a great time at their sauna because nudity is compulsary. WE find that saunas over here are full of stuffy people with hang ups. We have been to a few nude saunas here in the uk, but there are very few around these parts.

stay smooth and nude

Hi, I'm new in this community :)

To introduce myself: I'm David, am from Belgium and love to go to the sauna.

My favourite places i go to are:

1) Thermen in Dilbeek
2) Sauna Imelda in Mechelen
3) Thermae in Grimbergen

There are also lots of other nice places in my tiny country.... ;p

No need to say that in these saunas, the nudity is mandatory and is well respected by everyone.
